Planting a tree is a project the whole family can share.
Before You Dig
- Pick the right tree for your climate, space, and sunlight.
- Choose the spot. Look up for wires and consider how big the tree will become.
- Timing: Early autumn or early spring is usually best, when it’s not too hot or frozen.
Planting Steps
- Dig a hole about two to three times as wide as the root ball, and no deeper than the root ball itself.
- Gently loosen any circling roots.
- Set the tree in the hole so the base of the trunk sits level with the ground.
- Fill the hole with the soil you dug out, pressing gently.
- Water slowly and deeply.
- Spread mulch around the base in a ring, keeping it a few centimetres away from the trunk.
Aftercare
Water regularly during the first year or two, especially in dry weather. Check on the tree each season, and take a photo on the same day every year to see how it grows.
