Becoming a tree detective is easy. Look for these clues.
1. Leaves
- Are they simple (one blade) or compound (many leaflets)?
- Are they arranged opposite each other or alternating along the twig?
- Check the shape, edge, and size.
2. Needles or Broadleaves
Conifers have needles or scales and often make cones. Broadleaf trees have flat leaves.
3. Bark
Is it smooth, rough, flaky, or deeply furrowed? Try a bark rubbing with paper and a crayon.
4. Fruit and Seeds
Acorns, winged “helicopters,” berries, and cones are all useful clues.
5. Overall Shape
Is the tree tall and narrow, wide and rounded, or spreading?
Tools
A field guide or a free plant identification app helps confirm what you find.
Be Safe
Never eat berries, nuts, or mushrooms unless an experienced adult has identified them as safe. Look, draw, and photograph instead.
